The EU Commission has published the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) 2018. An index, Denmark tops once again.
DESI is structured around five main pillars: Connectivity, Human Capital, Use of Internet Services, Integration of Digital Technology, and Digital Public Services.
Denmark has improved in all areas compared to last year, with the exception of a minor decrease in the area of ‘Integration of Digital Technology’. However, Denmark still maintains its top position within the area.
In addition, Denmark has experienced a growth in the percentage of ICT specialists and Denmark continues to be on the forefront when it comes to the use of technology by businesses. Danish businesses are increasingly embracing digital technologies, such as cloud computing (38%) and social media (29 %).
Denmark’s new strategy for digital growth
The index acknowledges many of the initiatives that the Danish government has launched in its 'Digital Growth Strategy', where 134 million EUR has been allocated to digital initiatives running until 2025. Among the initiatives being highlighted in this year’s DESI are:
- Digital Hub Denmark: a digital matchmaking platform to improve companies’ access to talents and competences within emerging digital technologies.
- A Technology Pact: a cooperation between the Danish Government, business industry, and educational institutions, to promote digital and technical education.
- The world’s first blockchain solution for ship registrations.
Furthermore, the Danish government recently announced a new telecom settlement with ambitious plans to enhance digital coverage and promote the roll-out of 5G coverage. Among other initiatives, this proves that Denmark continues to improve and enhance its position as the most digital country in EU.
