CCUS

A complete CCUS ecosystem from research to commercial scale

CCUS

A complete CCUS ecosystem from research to commercial scale

Denmark offers a fully integrated Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage ecosystem where innovation does not stop at the lab. It scales.

With strong public funding, world-class research and access to real industrial emitters, Denmark enables companies to develop, test and commercialise CCUS solutions in one connected environment. Whether you are advancing capture technologies, developing CO2-based products or investing in storage infrastructure, Denmark is where ideas turn into viable business.

From research excellence to real-world impact

Denmark’s CCU ecosystem is built on a powerful research foundation combined with strong private and philanthropic investment.

The Novo Nordisk Foundation CO2 Research Center (CORC) is a leading international hub for carbon utilisation research, accelerating innovations that transform CO2 into valuable resources. The principal investigators of the center represents 11 different universities in 6 different countries. The global outreach is further strengthened by global initiatives such as the Acetate Consortium, supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which is pioneering CO2-based food production.

For companies, this means direct access to global cutting-edge research, talent and innovation pipelines ready for commercialisation.

A living Capture lab with industrial relevance

Denmark provides ideal conditions for testing and scaling Carbon Capture  technologies in real operational environments.
Companies can plug into a diverse base of emission sources, including:

  • Biomass-fired combined heat and power plants
  • Biogas-fired engines and boilers
  • Biogas upgrading facilities
  • Waste-to-energy plants
  • Cement and heavy industry

This allows for faster validation, lower development risk and a clear pathway from pilot to deployment.

At the same time, strong sector integration with district heating, renewable energy, hydrogen and Power-to-X enables companies to develop complete decarbonisation solutions, not just standalone technologies.

Strong funding and first-mover projects

Denmark is backing CCS with significant public investment and clear deployment targets.
Approximately EUR 5 billion has been allocated to support the development of carbon capture and storage projects, enabling the capture and storage of up to 2.3 million tonnes of CO2 annually in the initial phase.

This early commitment creates real market demand and de-risks investment for companies entering the Danish CCUS ecosystem.

Competitive CO2 storage across land and sea

Due to unique geological properties and a central position in Northern Europe, Denmark is uniquely positioned to offer a broad portfolio of CO2 storage options.
Exploration licences have been granted for:

  • Offshore storage
  • Nearshore storage
  • Onshore storage

And one of the offshore sites, Greensand, has been awarded an injection licence and a DNV certification.

The diversity is expected to enable some of the most cost-effective CO2 storage solutions globally, giving companies flexibility in designing and scaling their business models.

International partnerships driving momentum

Denmark’s CCUS sector is already attracting international players and capital.
Investments and partnerships from companies across Europe, Asia and North America highlight Denmark’s ability to combine political commitment with strong collaboration. This creates a dynamic ecosystem where international companies can enter, partner and scale quickly.

A stable framework for long-term investment

This makes Denmark an ideal base for companies looking to build and scale CCUS operations in Europe.
