Denmark strengthens biosolutions infrastructure with major investment

A new investment of DKK 44 million (EUR 5.89 million) from the Danish Board of Business Development will significantly strengthen Denmark’s biosolutions ecosystem. The funding will go to FermHub Zealand and the Danish Technological Institute, expanding test and scale-up facilities that are crucial in helping companies bring innovative products from idea to market.

When

The initiative includes Denmark’s largest publicly accessible precision fermentation tank - a 25,000-litre bioreactor - to be installed at FermHub Zealand, as well as an expansion of laboratory and pilot-scale facilities at the Danish Technological Institute. Together, these upgrades will provide start-ups and established companies with unique opportunities to test, validate, and scale their solutions in Denmark.

Boosting start-ups and SMEs

One of the key challenges in biosolutions is the so-called valley of death – the costly and complex stage between laboratory success and full-scale production. With the new investment, more companies will gain access to state-of-the-art facilities that allow them to move faster, more safely, and more efficiently through development phases.

This is especially important for start-ups and SMEs, which often lack access to advanced infrastructure. The facilities will provide them with flexible, customised solutions, making it easier to bring sustainable products to global markets.

This investment underlines Denmark’s long-term commitment to biosolutions as a key growth area. At the same time, it provides direct opportunities for international companies to accelerate innovation and scale sustainable solutions in a secure and collaborative environment.

“By expanding access to state-of-the-art testing and scale-up infrastructure, companies can accelerate their development and bring sustainable solutions to market faster. Denmark offers not only world-class research and talent, but also the facilities and collaborative ecosystem that make it easier for foreign companies to succeed and grow here.”

Strengthening Denmark’s global position

The new facilities will not only advance Denmark’s biosolutions ecosystem, they will also provide international companies with a reliable platform for scaling innovations that address global challenges. With a strong foundation of world-class infrastructure, leading research institutions, and long-term political and industrial commitment, Denmark is reinforcing its position as a stable and trusted partner in the development of biosolutions.

Background: Biosolutions Zealand

Since 2022, Denmark has made biosolutions a national priority, investing strategically in infrastructure to help companies move from research to large-scale production. A key part of this effort is Biosolutions Zealand, a lighthouse initiative supported by the Danish Board of Business Development.

Biosolutions Zealand brings together a broad public-private consortium of companies, research institutions, municipalities, and regional actors. The initiative has established a strong foundation of test, pilot, and demonstration facilities, fostered innovation collaborations, introduced scale-up vouchers for SMEs, and created a national overview of infrastructure to make facilities more accessible.

The recent allocation of DKK 44 million (EUR 5.89 million) to Fermhub Zealand and the Danish Technological Institute builds on this foundation, reflecting the strong political commitment to expanding Denmark’s biosolutions capacity. The funding is part of a new DKK 60 million (EUR 8.05 million) pool set aside by the Danish Government and Parliament to further boost biosolutions in Denmark.
