Denmark’s offshore wind expansion opens opportunities across the value chain

Denmark has awarded two major offshore wind projects to Swedish energy company Vattenfall, advancing its renewable energy expansion and creating potential opportunities for international suppliers, technology providers and service companies.

When

Two projects awarded, a third tender underway

Vattenfall will develop the North Sea Mid and Hesselø offshore wind farms, with a combined minimum capacity of 1,8 GW. Both projects are scheduled for completion by the ned of 2032 and are expected to generate electricity equivalent to the consumption of at least 1,8 million Danish and European households.

The projects form part of Denmark’s programme to add at least 2,8 GW of offshore wind capacity across three sites. The tenders use a two-way Contract for Difference (CfD) deisgned to reduce developers’ exposure to low electricity prices and provide greater revenue certainty. The third project, North Sea South, has a minimum capacity of 1 GW, with a bidding deadline in October 2028.

The awards build on Vattenfall’s existing offshore wind portfolio in Denmark of approximately  1,5 GW. The company’s continued expansion reflects Denmark’s importance to its offshore wind business, supported by established infrastructure and favourable wind resources.

Opportunities across the value chain

Large offshore wind projects can generate demand well beyond the project developer. Potential opportunities span engineering, component manufacturing, maritime services, construction and installation, logistics, consultancy, and operations and maintenance services.

Denmark offers an established ecosystem across these activities, bringing together specialist suppliers, technical expertise and port infrastructure. Port Esbjerg is a key hub for offshore wind installations, with the local industry having supported the deployment of more than 20 GW around off offshore wind capacity around the North Sea.

For international companies considering establishing or expanding operations in Denmark, this ecosystem offers access to potential customers, partners and specialist capabilities. Denmark’s location also provides a base for serving offshore wind projects across North Europe.

A long-term commitment to renewable energy

The new projects support Denmark’s continued expansion of renewable electricity generation. In 2025, renewable sources accounted for 92,4% of Denmark’s electricity generation, the highest share in the EU.

For companies across the offshore wind value chain, the combination of planned projects, experienced suppliers and established infrastructure provides a basis for exploring investment and expansion opportunities.
