The World Happiness Report 2026 is published by the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford, in partnership with Gallup, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network and an independent editorial board.

About the World Happiness Report

The World Happiness Report is published annually and ranks 146 countries according to subjective estimation, carried out by a survey where the respondents answer the following question:  

“Please imagine a ladder with steps numbered from 0 at the bottom to 10 at the top. The top of the ladder represents the best possible life for you and the bottom of the ladder represents the worst possible life for you. On which step of the ladder would you say you personally feel you stand at this time?”

According to the World Happiness Report, “This question is both democratic and universal. Rather than constructing an index from multiple metrics, the [scale] empowers people to make their own judgements about what matters most, regardless of their culture and background”. 

This approach puts people at the centre, allowing individuals across cultures to define what matters most to them. Typically, around 1,000 respondents are surveyed per country, including Denmark.
