Denmark introduces a new era of data-driven, emission-based nitrogen regulation

Denmark is changing the rules of the field. From 1 January 2027, agricultural nitrogen will be regulated based on output rather than input, and that shift opens the door for a new generation of agritech solutions.

When

With the new output-based nitrogen regulation, the focus moves to the nutrient losses themselves. For farmers, that means a growing need for solutions that can help them measure, manage and reduce nitrogen losses while maintaining productivity.

When results are what counts, technologies that deliver documented reductions in nutrient losses become directly valuable.

From regulation to innovation: a framework that drives demand

The new regulation increases the relevance of solutions within precision agriculture, nutrient management, biological solutions, digital farming, soil and crop monitoring, and valorisation of organic nutrients.

The framework is part of The Agreement of a Green Denmark, an unusually broad collaboration between government, agriculture, industry, nature and environmental stakeholders. It combines regulation with voluntary, locally anchored land-use changes and collective solutions.

And the ambition extends beyond nitrogen. Soil health, water quality, climate, biodiversity, resource efficiency and resilient food production are all part of Denmark's approach, creating opportunities for a broad range of sustainable agritech solutions.

A living lab for sustainable agriculture

Denmark combines ambitious environmental targets with a highly productive and technologically advanced agricultural sector. Danish farms offer real-world testing conditions and a receptive market for precision farming, sensors, AI and decision-support systems.

Collaboration is not the exception. It is how Danish agriculture works.

Partnership between businesses, research institutions and public authorities is central to Denmark’s approach to agricultural innovation. This ‘triple helix’ model brings together scientific expertise, commercial experience and policy support to develop and demonstrate new solutions. Government strategies and funding opportunities support this work, creating a framework for advancing sustainable agriculture and opportunities for international agritech companies to collaborate with Danish partners.

Test in Denmark, scale in Europe

Denmark is an EU Innovation Leader with strong capabilities in green and digital innovation. Establishing an R&D, pilot or commercial presence in Denmark provides a base within the EU Single Market and access to European research, innovation and agricultural networks.

The timing is right. The EU is increasingly focused on competitive, resilient and sustainable agriculture, with research and innovation explicitly targeting nutrient efficiency, soil, water, biodiversity, climate-smart agriculture and digitalisation. Solutions tested, demonstrated and refined in a demanding Danish market can subsequently be adapted for other European agricultural markets facing similar sustainability challenges.

Quite simply, Denmark is where the next generation of sustainable agriculture is put to the test.
