Denmark #1 in share of renewables in net electricity generation for 2024 in the EU

Denmark stands at the forefront of Europe’s renewable energy transition, with an impressive 88.4% of its net electricity generation sourced from renewables in 2024. This achievement is a testament to Denmark’s leadership in wind power, its forward-thinking technological innovations, and a policy framework that actively drives green investments. The country’s commitment to a sustainable future is not only reshaping its energy landscape but also setting a benchmark for Europe - and the world.
The EU has made significant strides, with renewable electricity now accounting for nearly half (47%) of total generation, a 2.6% increase from 2023. This milestone not only marks progress towards the EU’s energy goals but also strengthens Europe’s energy independence, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Denmark had the highest share of renewables in its net electricity generation with 88.4%, coming mostly from wind, followed by Portugal (87.5%, mostly wind and hydro) and Croatia (73.7%, mostly hydro). The lowest shares of renewables were recorded in Luxembourg (5.1%), Malta (15.1%) and Czechia (15.9%).

Looking ahead, Denmark’s ambitious target to reach 100% renewable electricity by 2030 is getting within reach. Denmark is investing heavily in offshore wind, energy storage, and green hydrogen, and its growing cleantech sector is attracting significant international investment. A combination of world-class infrastructure, a stable and transparent regulatory environment, and active public-private partnerships make Denmark an ideal location for renewable energy projects.

Last year Invest in Denmark helped attract 23 cleantech investment projects to Denmark.
