Danish Climate and Energy Projects Secure DKK 3.5 billion from the EU Innovation Fund

Aalborg Portland, Siemens Gamesa, European Energy, HydrogenPro, INEOS E&P, and Vestas. These are the names of the six companies that, with seven projects (Siemens has two), have secured funding for climate and energy projects from the EU Innovation Fund 2023. The projects will receive a total of EUR 464 million in funding – equivalent to DKK 3.5 billion – for solutions that collectively aim to displace over 33 million tons of CO2 over the next ten years.

When

The EU Commission's extensive Innovation Fund, financed through the sale of CO2 allowances in the EU's Emissions Trading System, has pledged a total of EUR 4.8 billion to support large-scale development of ground-breaking energy technologies. 
This will contribute to:

  • European decarbonisation objectives 
  • Reducing emissions from those sectors that are particularly difficult to decarbonise 
  • Strengthen European industrial manufacturing capacity 
  • And reinforce Europe's technology leadership and supply chain resilience

Breaking barriers – Danish projects gain ground in EU funding

Efforts to boost awareness of the EU Innovation Fund are paying off for Danish projects. Historically, Danish projects have faced challenges in securing EU funds from the more than 50 available EU programs. However, thanks to initiatives led by Denmark’s largest business organization, the Confederation of Danish Industry and the Danish Energy Agency, Danish businesses are now seeing positive results. Their targeted efforts to highlight the fund’s opportunities have strengthened Denmark’s position in the competitive EU funding landscape.

In December 2024, the EU Innovation Fund reopened for project applications. The EU Funding Team at the Danish Energy Agency is available to provide guidance and respond to inquiries from potential applicants. Additionally, as part of a new initiative, the Danish Energy Agency is offering complimentary project validation services to Danish stakeholders considering funding applications to the Innovation Fund.

On January 16, 2025, Energy Cluster Denmark, The Innovation Fund Denmark, The Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Programme (EUDP), The Danish Energy Agency and EU Innovation Fund hosted a national information session that will be followed by a series of webinars designed to provide potential applicants with deeper insights into the EU Innovation Fund.
