Masterclass: Green & Resilient - Flexible solutions for the Future Energy System


The future energy systems need to be green and resilient. As many countries work towards building out renewables in their energy mix, some of the challenges include balancing the grid given the intermittent nature of most renewable energy sources. 
Join Invest in Denmark for a Masterclass that will explore how flexible demand and a more decentralised or behind the meter approach can be part of the solution to help deal with grid constraints. 

During the session we will be exploring how commercial actors providing solutions that allow for flexible demand can build a business case leveraging fluctuating electricity prices, while also making the energy systems more resilient. why Denmark

Denmark has very ambitious National Climate Action targets working towards 70% reductions in COâ‚‚ emissions by 2030, net zero by 2045 and net negative by 2050 (110% reductions compared to 1990s level)

After 40+ years of targeted green policies, Denmark has now reached almost 90% renewables in its grid, aiming to bring this up to 100% by 2030, in some regions (DK1) already by 2028.

Denmark’s is working across all sectors and across the full value chain to reach net zero and offers excellent conditions for power-to-x/green hydrogen and derivatives, carbon capture, utilisation and storage projects and solutions that can improve grid resilience.

Power-to-X

  • Denmark has a strong ecosystem of clean energy companies working with Power-to-X development and implementation in transportation, agriculture and industry

  • E-fuel production with power sourced directly from the grid can be certified compliant with EU standards (RFNBO/Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) already in some areas in Denmark as the share of renewables in the grid are 90%.

  • The Danish government has allocated DKK 1.25 billion for power-to-x fuel production with a political target to reach 4-6 GW of electrolysis capacity by 2030 (Denmark’s Strategy on Power-to-X).

  • Power-to-x is developing based on future prioritised access to green power and a hydrogen pipeline access to the large German green hydrogen market, off-take opportunities across sectors incl. maritime and aviation and a focus on multiple e-fuels and the entire value chain to help decarbonise transportation, agriculture and industry.

  • Sites are available for large scale Power-to-X projects with salt caverns available also for green hydrogen storage.

Carbon capture, utilisation and storage

  • The Danish government has set aside DKK 38 billion (EUR 5 billion) to achieve reductions and removals of 3.2 million tons of CO2 per year from 2029 from hard-to-abate industries including cement, biogas upgrading, waste-to-energy and power generation, with tenders already awarded by The Danish Energy Agency for most of the funds.

  • Point-source capture is scaling with Ørsted beginning CO2 capture from its Asnæs and Avedøre power stations in 2026, and looking to capture and store 430,000 tonnes annually once fully operational. The NECCS fund allocated contracts to capturing CO2 from biogas with disbursements of over 300 million DKK in 2025 alone and the recently awarded CCS Fund will capture CO2 from Denmark’s only cement producer Aalborg Portland.

  • Denmark is an EU first mover in commercial-scale storage, using depleted North Sea oil and gas fields. Greensand Future became Denmark's first operational CO2 storage facility and the EU's first full-scale site when it opened in September 2026. Project Bifrost, an EU-designated Project of Common Interest, is developing an open and scalable CO2 transport and storage network in the Danish North Sea, targeting operations around 2030 with up to 335 million tonnes over its lifetime.

  • Denmark offers favourable conditions for CO₂ capture, storage and utilisation, with experience across the value chain. Its strengths include combined heat and power, waste-to-energy, energy-efficient industry, strong transport, district heating and advanced technology providers. Opportunities include cross-border CO₂ imports and storage, capture for hard-to-abate industries, liquefied CO₂ shipping and logistics, e-fuels and feedstocks, engineering, procurement and construction, and offshore well conversion.

Grid resilience

  • Denmark runs one of the most renewables-heavy grids in the world and has spent two decades building the institutional and physical infrastructure to keep it stable. It is now on a journey to decarbonise the last 10% of its energy mix while ensuring accelerated grid build out and grid stability as key political priorities.

  • Denmark and Germany reached a cost-sharing agreement on Bornholm Energy Island in January 2026, backed by a EUR 645 million EU grant, described by the European Commission as a first key delivery of the "Energy Highways" initiative under the European Grids Package.

  • Denmark is a hub for grid-hardware innovation with an EU-Denmark co-funded call currently supporting advanced power electronics and next-generation semiconductor technologies for industrial deployment, with Innovation Fund Denmark offering up to EUR 1.3 million for Danish-coordinated projects.

  • There is a strong need for solutions that can help decarbonise, further sector coupling, introduce flexibility or otherwise integrate behind-the-meter solutions. Denmark already offers some of the lowest power prices in Europe for non-household consumers and there is a strong business opportunity also if you can leverage negative pricing e.g. with flexible production running on a low baseload.

  • Commercial opportunities include interconnectors, offshore transmission engineering, grid flexibility, battery storage, demand response and Power-to-X electrolysers that absorb surplus wind power. Denmark's high wind share provides a testbed for these solutions. Further opportunities include power electronics and semiconductors for grid stability, hub construction, marine engineering, port electrification and digital power grid solutions for cybersecurity, forecasting, and managing variable wind generation.
