Denmark began developing district heating in 1979 and has since become one of the global leaders in the field, setting international benchmarks for district heating and cooling. Back in the early 2010s, electricity and district heating (excluding waste incineration) accounted for approximately 30-40 percent of Denmark’s greenhouse gas emissions. According to projections from the Danish Energy Agency, this share is expected to fall to just 3 percent by 2025 and below 1 percent by 2030, equivalent to only 0.1 million tonnes of CO2.
