Denmark's Largest Offshore Wind Power Procurement Procedure Launched

The Danish Energy Agency has launched Denmark's largest procurement procedure for offshore wind power, marking a significant step towards the country's green transition. This ambitious initiative aims to establish a minimum of 6 GW of offshore wind power by 2030, potentially increasing Denmark's offshore wind capacity to over 10 GW with the possibility of overplanting.

Massive Increase in Offshore Wind Capacity

The procurement procedure is divided into six sites across four key areas: North Sea I, the Kattegat, Kriegers Flak II, and Hesselø. The planned capacity distribution is as follows:

  • North Sea I: Minimum 3 GW, divided into three farms
  • Kattegat: Minimum 1 GW
  • Kriegers Flak II: Minimum 1 GW
  • Hesselø: 0.8-1.2 GW

Overplanting and Power-to-X Opportunities

In addition to the minimum 6 GW, the procurement procedure allows for overplanting, enabling the addition of more wind turbines and thus expanding the capacity to 10 GW or more. The green electricity generated could power more than 10 million Danish and European households or be used for hydrogen production and other Power-to-X products, replacing fossil fuels.

Denmark currently has an installed offshore wind capacity of 2.7 GW. The ongoing construction of the Thor Offshore Wind Farm in the North Sea will add another 1 GW by 2027. The realization of the 6 GW minimum capacity represents a substantial increase in Denmark's offshore wind capabilities.
