In 2020, Medtronic and Aarhus University Hospital established a public-private partnership focusing on the optimisation of non-patient activities in the form of materials handling and efficient planning of the surgical program at the Department of Neurosurgery.

Denmark has a long tradition for public-private partnerships, but is also an ideal place for testing new technologies and business models for the healthcare sector. With access to excellent public research and clinics that are outstanding in implementing new technology, Medtronic has the opportunity to scale technologies and business models globally.

Neurosurgery is a specialty with a distribution between planned and acute activity, which places great demands on planning. With the public-private partnership, Medtronic brings an innovative and data driven approach to Aarhus University Hospital.
For example, as part of the partnership focusing on efficient planning of the surgical program, a mathematical model examines how to achieve an optimal balance that can create space for the planned, acute, and semi-acute activity. So far, the activity in the operating room has increased by just over 10%, while the number of cancellations has decreased by 38%.
