Join Invest in Denmark at the Green Hydrogen Virtual Summit on 17 August 2020

Working towards a zero emissions world, discover how power-to-x technologies and the hydrogen industry are developing. Join Invest in Denmark at the Green Hydrogen Virtual Summit, which will take place from 17 to 21 August 2020.

Meet one of our dedicated advisors in the MeetMe Zone and listen in on Monday 17 August from 11.45-12.15 BST to the Policy session as we share insights about Denmark’s new Climate Action Plan and the role of international partnerships in achieving net zero.

Learn why Denmark is an attractive location for developing power-to-x and in particular green hydrogen technology and explore R&D, partnership and investment opportunities.

Danmark has ambitious climate action goals

Denmark is committed to reach very ambitious climate action goals as part of its green transition: to reduce overall carbon emissions by 70% already by 2030 (from the 1990 levels) and to run 100% on renewable energy with 80% coming from wind power. Already a global leader in wind technology, power-to-x and energy storage technologies are key to reach these targets.

In June 2020, the Danish government announced a first part of its Climate Action Plan with significant investments going into next generation technologies for power-to-x and carbon capture.

Key takeaways from the plan include:

  • Establishment of the world’s first energy islands
  • Transition to market driven build out of onshore wind and solar
  • Investments in next generation technologies: power-to-x and Carbon Capture (with significant amounts of funds allocated)
  • Support for biogas and other green gases (as early as 2022)
  • Energy efficiency measures
  • Green reform of heat taxes
  • Increased utilization of surplus heat (surplus heat from datacentres will no longer be taxed)
  • Retirement of individual oil and gas boilers
  • Green district heating (64 % of Danish households are already heated through district heating today)
  • Sustainability requirements for biomass based energy production
  • Green transport fund (including buildout of charging infrastructure for EVs)
  • Green tax reform (a CO2 tax will be introduced)

Denmark also actively supports R&D and demonstration projects through various programs including EUDP, which has a dedicated power-to-x fund and The Danish Green Investment Fund, which co-finances projects aiming to generate environmental savings, develop renewable energy sources and increase resource efficiency.

Energinet, Denmark’s national Transmission System Operator (TSO), is committed to ensure that market players can establish power-to-x clusters and will support the development of markets and infrastructure for hydrogen in Denmark. It has proposed construction of a hydrogen pipeline network and has already piloted 12% hydrogen mixed with natural gas in the existing natural gas grid.

Hydrogen Valley is Denmark’s dedicated hub to help create a new hydrogen economy and is already home to one of Europe’s largest plants for the production of hydrogen.

Overall, Denmark offers very favourable framework conditions in a growing market with many business opportunities:

  • A supportive and stable political climate
  • Excellent facilities for R&D and testing
  • A large talent pool and access to the most reliable power grid in Europe

Recently announced hydrogen projects in Denmark include:

  • Shell and Everfuel: building a 20MW electrolysis plant with 500MWh hydrogen storage with plans to eventually reach a 1GW of electrolysis capacity at the Shell refinery in Fredericia
  • Ørsted and Everfuel: building a 2MW electrolysis plant with a daily production of 600kg of green hydrogen powered by offshore wind power

What is The Green Hydrogen Virtual Summit?

The Green Hydrogen Virtual Summit will facilitate a high-level agenda packed with government and private sector decision-makers and a private MeetMe Zone for deal making. Green hydrogen is the fuel of the future. The agenda will bring together renewable power generators, project developers, debt providers and investors, gas grids and off-takers to define a new energy era fuelled by hydrogen.
