Through a new partnership project with VEKS and HTF, the excess heat generated by the data centre will be redirected to benefit the surrounding community. The data centre, currently under construction, will generate enough heat to warm upwards of 6,000 local households.

The site will be one of the first locations where Microsoft integrates technology for recovering waste heat in its data centres. This is made possible due to the proximity to existing waste heat recovery infrastructure and residential areas in Høje-Taastrup, as well as the collaborative partnership with VEKS, a leading district heating company in the region.

For Microsoft, the project showcases a commitment to responsible data centre
operations prioritising sustainability. The company's pledge to achieve 100%
renewable energy operations, including their data centres, by 2025 reflects a
shared goal for environmental sustainability and a more energy-efficient
future.

Incorporating sustainable solutions, surplus heat will be harnessed within the data centre through an air-to-liquid heat exchanger. This heat will then be transferred as heated water to the local district heating network via a network of pipes.
To further optimize its usability, heat pumps, installed by VEKS, will elevate the temperature of the heat. Subsequently, a heat exchanger, in conjunction with underground pipes, will facilitate the distribution of this heat to homes and businesses within the community connected to this innovative system.
