French Genvia to scale electrolyser technology in partnership with DTU in Denmark

With the race toward a net-zero future accelerating, innovation in hydrogen technology has never been more critical. Genvia, a leading French public-private joint venture, is taking a bold step forward by partnering with Technical University of Denmark (DTU) for a PhD project focused on solid oxide electrolysis technology with a special focus on co-electrolysis and the efficient production of green chemicals.

When

The solid oxide electrolysis cell technology (SOEC) is being upscaled at a rapid pace, also at Genvia, due to its high efficiency and hereby lower operational costs. The SOEC technology is used for co-electrolysis - converting green CO2 and water steam into a syngas, which can be used to produce various carbon-based green chemicals, needed in e.g. the plastic industry. However, there is still work left to be done in understanding the different opportunities for the usage of this technology and how to improve it further. This is what the partnership between Genvia and DTU sets out to do. 

Powered by low-carbon electricity sources, Genvia provides chemical plants with new opportunities to produce greener products and contribute to a cleaner value chain. Our technologies have application across a broad variety of large-scale industrial processes, from ammonia production to plastics.

A Global Hub for Hydrogen Research and Innovation

Denmark is widely recognised as a strong player in the hydrogen sector, which is also reflected in its research capabilities. The Department of Energy Conversion and Storage (DTU Energy), founded in 2012 and counting 250 employees, is leading within electrolysis research with a specific focus on SOEC electrolysis due to the scalability of this technology.

The focus on international cooperation and business sector collaboration within Danish universities makes them excellent partners for foreign businesses aiming to develop sustainable projects that create jobs and new opportunities.

Connecting Genvia to Denmark’s Power-to-X Ecosystem 

Invest in Denmark has supported Genvia in deepening their understanding of the Danish Power-to-X strategy, ecosystem and opportunities through internal presentations, invitations to webinars and roundtables, as well as meetings with relevant Danish stakeholders.

A fact-finding mission organised by Invest in Denmark in March 2022 also introduced Genvia to key Danish stakeholders in Power-to-X research, including DTU. Invest in Denmark assisted in both planning the itinerary and setting up meetings for Genvia with Danish strongholds in Power-to-X.

At Invest in Denmark, we work to promote even more public-private collaborations between international companies and Danish lead sectors, especially life science and cleantech, to further boost research and innovation. 

About Genvia

Genvia is a French public-private joint venture founded in 2021 between established engineering, construction and research organisations (SLB, CEA, Vinci, Vicat and Region Occitanie). The venture is created to accelerate affordable clean hydrogen production, energy storage and fuel applications at scale. By providing cost-effective access to high-performance electrolyser technology (SOEC), Genvia will support and collaborate closely with heavy industry to decarbonise processes and achieve emissions targets.
