World's largest shipping company, MAERSK to sail on Danish e-methanol

A new partnership between the world’s largest shipping company MAERSK and the two Danish companies European Energy and REintegrate was announced today. The two companies are to deliver e-methanol to MAERSK’s first CO2 neutral ship expected to leave port by 2023.
With the ambitious goal to become CO2 neutral by 2050, MAERSK, as the first shipping company in the world, ordered a CO2 neutral ship to be delivered by 2023. Simultaneous, MAERSK has been on the lookout for partners within renewable energy.

"We are proud to be at the forefront of the green transition of the shipping industry. Earlier, we talked a lot about technical aspects of the ships, but the really big question has been about future fuel. Now, we can start and get e-methanol tested in practice."
Henriette H. Thygesen CEOof Fleet & Strategic Brands
The partnership means European Energy and REintegrate will build an e-methanol plant that by 2023 will be able to produce 10.000 tonnes CO2 neutral e-methanol to MAERSK. The e-methanol will be produced by REintegrate – a spinout of a research project at Aalborg University – in a unique way by using power from e.g. solar or wind turbines and biogenic CO2 from biogas plants.

Politically, the green transition of the transport sector is a crucial piece of the puzzle to support Denmark’s ambitious goal to reduce CO2 emissions by 70% by 2030. The partnership is therefore a welcoming project in Denmark.
