Successful launch of the world's biggest aircraft in Copenhagen

United Arab Emirates airline Emirates increased its capacity when introducing the world’s biggest aircraft, the Airbus A380, on its Copenhagen-Dubai route.

More than 300,000 passengers have flown the A380 on the Dubai-Copenhagen route since its launch a year ago. This means that Emirates has experienced a passenger increase of almost 30 percent.

Copenhagen Airport was the first and only Nordic airport to be served by the large Airbus A380 in scheduled service. CEO of Copenhagen Airport, Thomas Woldbye, is pleased with the development:

"It is extremely positive that Emirates’ A380s continuously fly so many passengers between Dubai and Copenhagen. The air services Emirates offers open Denmark up further as a tourist destination, which is important for the Danish economy, and it increases the accessibility of Denmark to the rest of the world to the benefit of both businesses and tourists," he says.

The A380 aircraft has a capacity of 615 seats. With its new configuration, the aircraft produces the lowest CO2 emissions per passenger kilometre of all commercial airplanes. In addition to the large passenger flow, Copenhagen Airport serves as sky cargo hub for Emirates.

Interconnectivity boosts growth

Copenhagen Airport has grown rapidly over the last 10 years with more and better connections to international destinations together with a steady increase in the number of passengers passing through the airport.

The geographic location of Copenhagen Airport gives us an advantage as a gateway to the rest of Northern Europe, and at the same time the good connections to mega hubs such as Dubai makes the combined connectivity quite unique.

Thomas Woldbye, CEO Copenhagen Airport
“We are excited to see the success of Emirates in the Nordics and Denmark in particular,” adds Jesper Evensen, Team Leader at Invest in Denmark.

“The increasing number of international routes and passengers strengthens Copenhagen Airport’s position as one of the world’s elite airports. This is important for our work with investment attraction as well as the growth of both Danish and international companies.”

Emirates began operations from Dubai to Copenhagen in August 2011, and in 2014 Emirates selected Copenhagen Airport as its main cargo hub in Northern Europe. The A380 has served the route between Dubai and Copenhagen since December 2015. With a fleet of more than 250 aircraft, Emirates currently flies to over 150 destinations in more than 80 countries around the world.
