Made helps manufacturing companies digitalize and establish sustainable production

The newly appointed national Cluster for Advanced Manufacturing - MADE (Manufacturing Academy of Denmark) is already experiencing significant commitment from the industry. MADE is increasing its regional footprint and engaging with SME’s who are yet to start the digital and sustainable transition.

National cluster with a regional footprint

MADE seeks to strengthen the ecosystem of manufacturing in Denmark. In Denmark, the national cluster organisations play an important role by facilitating and promoting cooperation in the ecosystems of Denmark’s strongest and most promising business and technology fields – one national cluster for each position of strength.

As new national Cluster for Advanced Manufacturing, MADE covers the entire value chain across the manufacturing industry and in all regions of Denmark.

”We want to ensure an even stronger cooperation across the country through new partnerships with the regional business hubs, enabling us to assist even more SME’s and develop world class manufacturing in Denmark. In partnership with the Regional Business Hubs, we have developed a new initiative called “kickstart” – which provides SME’s who are looking to digitalize or make the transition to sustainable production with access to specialists, who can identify and implement the first improvements within a week, and assist with establishing a roadmap for the long term transition. MADE is a national collaboration across industry, the Danish Universities and RTOs, and the new partnership with the Regional Business Hubs will further our ability to help the local SME’s who have not previously been active in the Danish Innovation system, which is a great development.”
Morten Buhl Sørensen MADE Chairman, Senior Vice President Supply Chain, Danfoss Drives
The majority of the current 220 members of MADE are SME’s with less than 100 employees. Therefore, it is important for the cluster’s members and MADE to be present across the entire industrial manufacturing and innovation landscape of Denmark, including all regional business hubs.

”As something new, we will, in close cooperation with the regional business hubs, offer to visit SME’s to spar with them and offer concrete suggestions for improvements that can be realized within one workweek. We have partners throughout the country and with the new cooperation, we will get an even stronger local footprint. This we are very pleased with.”

Danish manufacturers committed to addressing global manufacturing and supply chain challenges

In the spring of 2020, the applied research and innovation platform MADE FAST (Flexible, Agile and Sustainable production supported by Talented employees) was launched to develop new solutions for SME’s and larger production companies to establish flexible and sustainable manufacturing capabilities and skills. The need for the platforms solutions has been underlined in 2020 where Danish manufacturing has faced multiple challenges, such as the need for environmental sustainability, COVID-19, changes in global trade and disruptive digital technologies.  The commitment to the MADE FAST innovation platform has increased throughout 2020.

“We are experiencing a great deal of commitment, curiosity and willingness to cooperate. SMEs, larger manufacturers, universities, and RTOs are working together to develop new solutions, products, and knowledge. Companies collaborate in joint projects to improve their productivity, sustainability, flexibility, and agility”.
Nigel Edmondson MADE Managing Director

Two Danish manufacturers, participating in MADE FAST, are cement producer Aalborg Portland and recycled plastic producer Plastix. Aalborg Portland has committed to reduce their CO2 emissions by 30 %, which requires new technologies. Plastix looks to develop new circular business models, and through MADE FAST, the SME Plastix will explore how recycled plastic can be used for food packaging.
