How the Danish government supports the world-leading Danish ingredients industry
The ingredient industry is a national priority area for the Danish government and supporting the position of the Danish ingredients industry as a global leader is pivotal to the authorities.
New ingredient strategy
The Danish government has several official initiatives targeted the Danish ingredients industry and the latest addition is a new ingredient strategy aiming to support the growth of the sector. The strategy has been developed and put to action by the government as the result of a process run by a close collaboration between the authorities, the industry and academia.
As an important part of the strategy, the Danish Food Administration has established a new and specialized Ingredients Team within the Administration. The Ingredients Team is working on multiple initiatives to support the ingredients industry by breaking down barriers for innovation and growth - with a special focus on sustainable growth.

Forum for Future Ingredients
To ensure alignment between the activities of the Ingredients Teams and the challenges, strategies and visions of the industry, the Forum for Future Ingredients has been set up by the Danish Food Administration.
The Forum counts twenty members from companies, academia, trade associations and authorities and its role is to ensure the best possible conditions for the ingredients industry in solving the global challenges for a more sustainable food and feed production.
”With this Forum we bring the Food Administration even closer to the ingredients industry for us to clarify relevant regulations and to guide and support companies in the best possible manner.”
A Spokesperson for the Industry
According to Tanne Severin Holm from the Danish Food Administration, the Forum will act as a spokesperson for the industry by addressing the most relevant and urgent challenges – and identifying the solutions to create an outstanding foundation for innovation, development and growth in the Danish ingredients industry. The industry has given the Forum a good reception and is all set to actively participate in a solution-oriented dialogue.
I think it is important that we create a network where we can mutually benefit from discussions and interpretation of regulations in order to promote the efforts of the Danish ingredients industry to solve the global food challenges.
Some of the challenges of the industry revolve around national or EU regulations on very specific topics like novel food while others concern innovation projects, access to markets, export issues or strategic initiatives.
The topics or challenges brought to light in the Forum will provide the Food Administration with a solid understanding of how to support the industry by reducing barriers, opening doors and identifying opportunities.
Shortly after the establishment of the Forum, the first initiatives have materialized. One of these have taken the form of a task force created to work in-depth with the topic of “Sustainable Supply”. The task force will revolve around three sub-categories; challenges, opportunities and barriers for commercialization of new ingredients derived from side streams from feed and food production, identification and development of sustainable feed for insects to be used for human consumption and regulatory issues for novel food.
