The Danish Maritime Authority Paves the Way for new technological solutions

The Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) has with its new initiative DMA Regulatory Future Lab (Future Lab) taken the initiative to become a facilitator and partner for innovative maritime solutions especially in the fields of green tech, decarbonization and digitalization.

Shipping is regulated by global rules and standards ensuring a vital global level of safety and an equally vital level-playing field. However, new maritime technology and solutions are evolving faster than regulation can keep up with, and as a consequence there is a risk that regulation becomes a barrier for first movers’ introduction of innovative solutions.

A Future Lab for Maritime Innovation

The Future Lab is a matrix organization that handles challenging inquires that need authority approval or acceptance. By finding safe, secure and environmentally friendly solutions, the DMA can help clients overcome the barrier they face in the light of existing or future regulations.

The Future Lab handles inquires on innovations that are ready to be implemented on commercial vessels. However, the lab can also help with early stage innovations that need room or geography to test out new ideas.

Global Shipping is facing historical technological and commercial challenges in relation to climate change, sustainability and digitalisation. We see an accelerated innovation of new technologies and innovative solutions from the industry to meet the desired development. For the same reason, we have established the Future Lab as a framework for us to be an active partner in the advancement that shipping is undergoing and to take part in facilitating that good ideas can be implemented in a safe and sustainable manner

Co-creating new solutions for the Maritime Industry

By flying the Danish flag, you will be part of high quality shipping, an international outlook and maritime innovation. With Future Lab, DMA is ready to assist you with approvals and regulation of innovative solutions.

In general, the first step in the Future Lab is to get an in-dept understanding of the project in order to determine if the project challenges regulation and needs management in the Lab.

Next step is for DMA to define the approval basis. Each inquiry is unique and the regulation that follows may be different on each case. Nevertheless, with the approval basis in place, the client and the DMA will develop and agree upon a framework for analysis, test or evaluation of the project.

As a close partner of the DMA, Invest in Denmark assists foreign companies with establishing and growing their businesses in Denmark. In collaboration with DMA, we find the optimal solution for working with maritime innovative solutions in Denmark.
