Danish diabetes hospital appointed as an international role model

The Global Coalition for Value in Healthcare of the World Economic Forum has named Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen to be among the best in the world to develop a value-based healthcare system for the benefit of people living with diabetes and other chronic diseases.
Chronic diseases including diabetes pose major challenges for populations, healthcare and economies globally. Thus, it is necessary for the global healthcare systems to work towards a cross-sectoral oriented collaboration that provides more healthy lives for citizens with chronic diseases, a high user satisfaction in the treatment and new forms of treatment that are structurally and economically sustainable.

The industry as a partner

Denmark has a long tradition for interdisciplinary, cross-sector collaboration and systematic public-private partnerships. The close collaboration between the private companies and the public healthcare system is important to secure new and innovative medicine and healthcare products for the patients.

Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen is one of the early examples of a public-private collaboration. Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen goes back to the Nordic Insulin Laboratory (now Novo Nordisk) established back in 1923. In 1932, the company established the first Nordic Diabetes Hospital to treat people with diabetes and the public healthcare system soon realized the potential and entered into a collaboration with the Life Science industry.

Today, Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen is a public-private partnership between the Capital Region of Denmark and the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The Novo Nordisk Foundation has donated €0.4 billion for further development of the hospital. With the recognition from the World Economic Forum, Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen enters a small group of world leading healthcare providers, each selected to be a showcase for the rest of the world in relation to disseminating examples of value-based healthcare with a sharp focus on creating the greatest possible value for the individual citizen.

Some of the remarkable results that the public-private cooperation has achieved so far include that almost no one goes blind because of diabetes as well as an 80 percent reduction in diabetes-related leg amputations.
