Danish Climate partnerships lead the way for a global sustainable future

The government and the business community in Denmark partner up to find solutions on how to reach the ambitious goal of a 70% decline in CO2 emissions by 2030. Especially, the climate partnership for the manufacturing industry is prepared to take responsibility.

Climate Partnership for the manufacturing industry has set ambitious goals

Since 1990, Danish manufacturing sector has expanded by 35 percent, while CO2 emissions have declined by 65 percent. Although the industry is moving in the right direction new measures are necessary to cut down emissions further.

The Climate Partnership has presented a total of 61 actions, specified across eight focus areas: energy efficiency, electrification and heating, a shift to biogas, sustainable supply chains and production and demand for sustainable solutions, capturing and removing CO2, increased use of surplus heat, more green transport and securing a global impact with the use of Danish technologies. The suggested measures to reduce the industry’s CO2 emissions are devided into three categories:

  1. Direct emissions caused by production.
  2. Indirect emissions caused by energy and heat supply.
  3. Indirect emissions occurring in upstream and downstream value chains such as transportation and materials.

Recommendations followed by high ambitions

Question is, what should the measures lead to? The vision is not to be mistaken – by 2030 to become the world's first climate-neutral manufacturing industry and to generate increased green exports, growth and employment in Denmark.

"Looking ahead to 2030, we already have a feasible plan of up to 85% reduction in our direct emissions. The last step requires access to biogas. From there, only a few percent are left. If these things come into place we can have the world's first climate-neutral production industry in 2030. That is the ambition."

Also the climate partnership for waste, water and circular economy sets the bar high. By 2030, the partnership’s vision is to be the world's leading circular economy where 90% of all waste is recycled and where the water industry is climate-neutral.

How will the government take action on the recommendations?

On the basis of the climate partnerships’ recommendations and contributions the government will assess whether and how the reported measures and barriers should be addressed politically in a 2020 Climate Action Plan.
The climate partnerships' final contributions and the government's climate action plan will together represent a mutual commitment to strive towards a 70% reduction of the emission of greenhouse gases in Denmark by 2030.

Background

Danish businesses play a crucial role in achieving the government's goal to reduce greenhouse gases by 70% by 2030 and to ensure that the green transition becomes a driver of green growth for Danish businesses. The Danish government, together with the business community, has established 13 climate partnerships which identify ideas that can help address climate change and at the same time make Denmark a pioneering country for the rest of the world.

The 13 joint public-private climate partnerships each represent an industry. The partnerships have now presented their first recommendations to the Danish government on how to reduce CO2 emissions by 70% by 2030. The partnerships have introduced ideas on specific actions and measures that can reduce CO2 emissions in their respective industries as well as how to strengthen the companies' green competitiveness in a global context.
