Aarhus University Hospital pushes optimisation agenda with public-private partnership

To optimise the planning of surgeries and materials handling, Aarhus University Hospital partners with Medtronic, one of the largest medical device companies in the world.
In 2020, Medtronic and Aarhus University Hospital established a public-private partnership focusing on the optimisation of non-patient activities in the form of materials handling and efficient planning of the surgical program at the Department of Neurosurgery.

"We introduced Aarhus University Hospital to a new business model focusing on value based healthcare. This has led to an increase in the number of surgeries, a quicker and more efficient treatment of patients as well as reduction of waste."
Naomi Pagh Commercial Partnership & Governmental Affairs Director, Medtronic Denmark
Neurosurgery is a specialty with a distribution between planned and acute activity, which places great demands on planning. With the public-private partnership, Medtronic brings an innovative and data driven approach to Aarhus University Hospital.

For example, as part of the partnership focusing on efficient planning of the surgical program, a mathematical model examines how to achieve an optimal balance that can create space for the planned, acute, and semi-acute activity. So far, the activity in the operating room has increased by just over 10%, while the number of cancellations has decreased by 38%.
