Volta Energy plugs into Denmark to power Nordic growth
Volta Energy delivers sustainable, off-grid energy generation through hybrid mobile units that combine solar power, batteries, and a sustainable back-up generator in a smart 3-in-1 solution. Compared to a traditional genset, the units can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 95%.
Designed primarily for stable off-grid power supply, the solution offers a clean alternative where grid capacity is limited. It also supports temporary high-demand use cases such as peak shaving, making it a flexible option across industries.
Volta Energy’s customers span critical infrastructure, construction, wind turbine projects, infrastructure developments and agriculture, as well as festivals and events, which lease the mobile units for a more sustainable and cost-effective power supply.
Currently, over 400 units are in daily operation across Europe with continuous development underway. Around 40 of these units are powered by methanol fuel cell technology, delivering 100% CO2 reduction. Additional methanol-based units are now being produced specifically for the Danish market.
Volta Energy on choosing Denmark
Denmark is at the forefront of sustainability and technological innovation. This will help us accelerate our progress. We are therefore eager to play an active role in reducing CO2 emissions in line with EU guidelines, and we want to achieve this in a clean, reliable and intelligent way.
We are investing in Denmark with the intention of growing our business there, as we recognize the enormous potential of our 3-in-1 mobile energy solution to help customers and industries become more sustainable.
Invest in Denmark on welcoming Volta Energy
We are delighted to welcome Volta Energy to Denmark. As we work towards reaching 100% green power by 2030, we will need more flexible and sustainable off-grid solutions to help support our electricity grid and reach our ambitious 2035 climate goal to achieve 82% reduction in CO2 emissions.
We look forward to continue to support Volta Energy as they expand across Denmark and the Nordics.
How Invest in Denmark supported Volta Energy
Invest in Denmark helped provide strategic advice and information about the Danish market and framework conditions, and facilitated introductions to key stakeholders and services providers.
We highly appreciate the commercial facilitation provided by Invest in Denmark. Invest in Denmark has also been very helpful in relation to legal guidance, including facilitating access to legal advisors and providing clarity on the legal and regulatory requirements necessary to support our expansion.
Why Denmark?
Denmark's 2035 climate goal is to achieve an 82% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 levels with a pathway to climate neutrality by 2045. This ambition is backed by significant public funding, including approximately EUR 500 million (DKK 4 billion) in annual climate-related investments from 2034 onwards.
In 2024, Denmark reached a new record of 88% of net electricity generation coming from renewable sources, led by wind, which accounted for around 54% of domestic supply. Biomass and solar further strengthened the energy mix, keeping Denmark firmly on track towards its goal of 100% renewable electricity by 2030.
As the share of fluctuating renewables such as wind and solar increase in the energy mix, Denmark offers great opportunities for companies that can help solve for - or even leverage - intermittency and fluctuating energy prices through energy storage, flexible off grid and behind-the-meter solutions as well as smart grid technologies or flexible production, creating ideal conditions for innovative companies to scale and grow.
