Taiwan-based YesHealth invests in Nordic Harvest, one of the largest vertical farms in Europe

In a joint investment with Danish investors, Taiwan-based YesHealth – the largest vertical farming company in Asia - has invested in Nordic Harvest to establish one of the largest vertical farms in Europe supplying lettuce and herbs to Danish consumers.
Nordic Harvest is located in Copenhagen – and once fully finalized the farm will grow crops in 14 layers, harvest 15 times a year and supply an annual amount of 1,000 tonnes of food. The crops are grown hydroponically using 95% less water than traditional production. No pesticides are used and Nordic Harvest uses only biological fertilizer. LED lights provide for both optimal temperature and sufficient light – and run on renewable energy from wind power.

“In Denmark, we grow world-class food, and we are known for our high quality. However, to create a sustainable food production we need to continuously develop and innovate. Nordic Harvest is a great example of exactly that, and therefore, we are happy to invest in them, as well as offering a loan from the Danish Green Investment Fund, and we look forward to following Nordic Harvest on their journey,”
Rolf Kjærsgaard  Co-investor Vaekstfonden, CEO

Background

To feed the growing global population with the same amount of land and at the same time reduce the carbon footprint from food production, a transformation of the global food systems must take place.

Vertical farming is one of the solutions as it offers more crops on less land, year-round production not limited by natural seasons, no use of chemicals or pesticides and close proximity to consumers.

be a part of the future of sustainable food

Investing in vertical farming is one way of investing in the future of sustainable food technologies.

Info What is vertical farming?

In vertical farms, crops are grown indoors in vertically stacked layers and in a controlled environment where temperature, nutrients, lighting, irrigation, and air circulation are constantly monitored and adjusted.

Most vertical farms benefit from soilless farming techniques such as hydroponic, where plants are grown in water containing nutrients, or aeroponics, where the plants’ roots are sprayed with a mist of water and nutrients.

Benefits from vertical farming:

  • Crops can be grown all year around.
  • Growing crops in layers reduces the need for farming land.
  • Crops can be produced close to the consumers reducing the need for long transportation.
  • There is no or very limited need for pesticides or other chemicals as the crops grow in a closed indoor environment.
