VEKS and Microsoft anticipate the initial deliveries to residents during the winter months of 2025-2026.
“There is significant potential for surplus heat from data centres in the capital region. This agreement represents a concrete contribution to VEKS' commitment to even more environmentally friendly and sustainable district heating in the future - at an attractive price significantly below what VEKS would otherwise pay for heat.”
For Microsoft, the project showcases a commitment to responsible data centre
operations prioritising sustainability. The company's pledge to achieve 100%
renewable energy operations, including their data centres, by 2025 reflects a
shared goal for environmental sustainability and a more energy-efficient
future.
“Our data centres aspire to be among the world's most sustainable. We have made significant investments in energy efficiency as part of establishing our data centres in Denmark. The agreement with VEKS is a crucial step towards creating an environmentally conscious Danish data centre region, where recycled surplus heat benefits both citizens and the environment.”
Incorporating sustainable solutions, surplus heat will be harnessed within the data centre through an air-to-liquid heat exchanger. This heat will then be transferred as heated water to the local district heating network via a network of pipes.
To further optimize its usability, heat pumps, installed by VEKS, will elevate the temperature of the heat. Subsequently, a heat exchanger, in conjunction with underground pipes, will facilitate the distribution of this heat to homes and businesses within the community connected to this innovative system.
“Heat utilization and integration between the data center and district heating is a really good solution for everyone. Invest in Denmark is pleased to have helped to facilitated the initial dialogue between the partners.”
