Microsoft boosts Danish digitalisation with a massive investment in a sustainable data center region

Today, Microsoft announced its most comprehensive investment in the company’s 30-year history in Denmark. The company will establish a sustainable data centre region in Zealand, Denmark, which means a digital upgrading of 200,000 Danes by 2024.

New opportunities for digital growth, public digitization and a greener future

The data centre region will consist of three locations on Zealand and will ensure Danish customers' direct access to Microsoft Cloud, world-class security and provide storage of data on Danish soil that is supplied with 100 % renewable energy.

Microsoft’s investment will contribute to new opportunities for digital growth, digitalisation of the public sector, digital innovation in Danish companies and last but not least, the use of technology that can contribute to a greener future.

An economic lift for the Danish tech eco-system

The Danish data centre region provides new opportunities for Microsoft’s comprehensive partner eco-system, which builds and implements innovative solutions on Microsoft Cloud. Microsoft collaborates in Denmark with more than 3000 partners. According to the American consulting house IDC, DKK 1 of consumption in Microsoft Cloud will generate revenue of more than DKK 7 for Microsoft’s Danish partners over the next four years.

Reduction of CO2 footprint

The investment is focused on a sustainable future. The fact that Danish data in the future will be stored within the country’s borders will provide for digitization of the public sector and the utilization of the latest software technology. On top of that, the data centre region will be supplied with 100% renewable energy, which will contribute to Danish customers being able to reduce the CO2 footprint of their IT consumption while at the same time digitalisation increases.

According to the Danish consulting company The Footprint Firm emissions from traditional IT consumption in Denmark correspond to approx. 300,00 tonnes of CO2 per year. At the same time, a report from the consulting engineering company WSP shows that services from Microosft Cloud can be up to 93 % more energy efficient than traditional data centres.

Boost of 200,000 Danes digital competencies by 2024

As part of the investment in a new data centre region, Microsoft is taking the initiative to upgrade the competencies of 200,000 Danes digitally by 2024. The plan includes comprehensive technical training programs and Azure certifications of partners and users as well as digital educational opportunities for children and young people.

Through Linkedin Learning, Microsoft will also provide free access to courses and tools for job search as well as facilitate access to certifications for job seekers and the unemployed. Furthermore, Microsoft will double their investment in deep technical competencies and secure the IT experts of the future. This year, the company has increased the investment in technical training and certification in Cloud technology at our customers and partners by DKK 25 mio.
