Plug Power will provide 1 GW electrolyser for H2 Energy

H2 Energy orders a 1GW Power-to-X (PtX) plant in Esbjerg from American Plug Power. When installed, the electrolyser will be the largest capacity electrolyser installation in the world to date, and will play a central role in the Danish energy supply chain.

mega scale green hydrogen production

By harnessing offshore wind power, Plug Power’s electrolyser technology will enable a production of 100,000 metric tonnes of green hydrogen per year. As such, Power-to-X solutions will provide European countries a strong foundation for reaching independence from Russian gas.

invest in denmark's journey with h2 energy

Since 2021, Invest in Denmark has assisted H2 Energy with facilitating contact to Energinet, the Municipality of Esbjerg, advisory engineers and Din Forsyning. Further, Invest in Denmark has supported H2 Energy with relevant information regarding green power availability and the development of the Power-to-X market.

“It is great news that H2 Energy has finalised their process of finding the well-suited supplier Plug Power. We are proud to have assisted H2 Energy in the process of establishing the Power-to-X plant in Esbjerg. This proves how Denmark is committed in constructing a strong green hydrogen infrastructure.”
Kim Schultz Special Advisor in Cleantech, Invest in Denmark

The number of Power-to-X projects in Denmark are steadily increasing with approximately 30 announced projects of a combined 7 GW capacity. The 1GW Power-to-X project with H2 Energy is the largest project Invest in Denmark has been a part of so far.

the importance of the north sea summit

The historical gathering of European leaders at the North Sea Summit in Esbjerg on May 18th 2022 manifested the crucial relevance of Power-to-X plants. Due to the strong commitment among government leaders to produce 65 GW offshore wind by 2030 and doubling the offshore wind capacity to a minimum of 150 GW prior to 2050, the North Sea will be Europe’s future green power plant.

At the summit, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany signed ‘the Esbjerg Declaration’. This declaration legally commits the countries to deliver half of the offshore wind demanded by the EU Commission in order to reach climate neutrality in Europe.

repowereu and going forward

Due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, European alliances are more necessary than ever before. The REPowerEU Action Plan contains nine concrete initiatives to ensure European independence from Russian fossil. An essential part of the action plan is the acceleration of permitting procedures regarding renewables by shortening the permitting duration from seven years to one.

At the North Sea Summit, President of the European Commission Ursala von der Leyen expressed how Esbjerg would play a vital role in development of accelerating permits.

Going forward, the new political agreements will ensure a strong commitment to green hydrogen and Power-to-X solutions. Invest in Denmark is looking forward to continue the dialogue with H2 Energy and Power Plug about the framework conditions in Denmark and their upcoming business adventures in Denmark.
