FMC makes Denmark centre of European innovation

The U.S. chemistry corporation FMC established its European headquarters in Copenhagen, benefiting from a strong bioscience industry cluster with excellent academia-business links.
FMC’s headquarter and European innovation centre serves as a central hub for research and development, regional corporate functions and regional commercial teams. It is located at the Scion DTU Science and Technology Park in Horsholm, approximately 25 kilometres north of Copenhagen.

Results

FMC Corp Denmark has succeeded in bringing together approximately 150 employees who previously worked at sites throughout Europe and the U.S., including employees in research, sales, marketing, regional management, finance, supply chain, human resources and related functions.

The company set out for a location with strong industry presence and access to talent and research facilities. Today, FMC in Denmark benefits from a strong life science cluster, favourable labour costs, excellent research facilities across academia and business plus talent of high quality.

Denmark is a well-known centre for food and bioscience research with an exceptional workforce. It is a country known for its strong labour force and quality of living. The European Innovation Centre will enhance our ability to collaborate with customers and suppliers throughout the region, and ensure that we fulfil the growth potential of our newly combined company.

How did Invest in Denmark offer support?

Invest in Denmark worked with FMC Corporation since the acquisition of Cheminova, which gave them a good foothold in the European crop protection market as well as in South America. The new strong position in Europe required consolidation and optimisation efforts and Medicon Valley in the Greater Copenhagen area served as a perfect location for combining headquarter functions with R&D activities.

Invest in Denmark assisted in mapping potential locations and organised three fact-finding tours, meeting with potential partners as well as foreign companies with many years of experiences running European or Nordic headquarter operations out of Denmark.

Furthermore, Invest in Denmark assisted FMC in giving its U.S. management a comprehensive understanding of Danish business framework conditions as well as a thorough overview of R&D opportunities in Medicon Valley.

Once convinced that Horsholm should be the home of FMC EU Headquarter, Invest in Denmark together with Copenhagen Capacity assisted in developing relocation packages for EU employees moving to Denmark by working with partners such as International House Copenhagen. Additionally, Invest in Denmark introduced FMC to service providers and assisted with talent attraction services.
