Interview with Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE Offshore wind at WindEurope 2023
RWE is one of Europe’s leading energy companies – originating in Essen, Germany. The company is responsible for the construction of Thor offshore wind farm – the largest offshore wind farm in Denmark that will be established off the west coast of Jutland and connected to the grid by 2027 supplying electricity for approximately 1 million households.
Watch Sven Utermöhlen explain why Denmark is one of the most important markets for RWE’s future growth perspectives in offshore wind.
RWE in Denmark
Denmark is an
important market for RWE due to high potential for offshore wind along both the
Norths Sea coast and the Baltic Sea coast, which can make Denmark a huge
provider of offshore energy to the rest of Europe.
Denmark has a strong
wind ecosystem and it is one of the countries, where wind power was developed
first. Furthermore, there is a strong acknowledgement of the potential
that offshore wind holds in Denmark and the wind ecosystem holds a vast
collection of supply chain companies, service companies and a lot of know-how
in the Danish society about wind that makes Denmark an attractive market.
RWE sees additional opportunities in
Denmark especially in the field of offshore wind due to the Danish government’s
announcement of auction volume to come to the market in future years. Denmark
is also a part of the cord between the North Sea states to build out 300 GW of
offshore wind by 2050.
Also other opportunities such as power-to-x and turning offshore wind power e.g. into green hydrogen is a perspective, which will be important for both Denmark and RWE.
